Athens Attractions Opening Hours, Season by Season
Athens attractions opening hours are not one timetable but several, and the differences are where afternoons get lost: the state sites step down through six seasonal bands, most of them close at 15:00 in winter while the Acropolis runs to 17:00, the National Archaeological Museum opens at 13:00 on Tuesdays all year, and the Acropolis Museum keeps a calendar of its own with a Friday that runs to 22:00. The state archaeological sites open at 08:00 all year. From 1 April to 31 August most close at 20:00; from 1 November to 31 March most close at 15:00, and the Acropolis at 17:00. Last admission is twenty minutes before closing everywhere.

State archaeological sites, six seasonal bands
Opening is 08:00 at every site in this table, all year. What changes is the closing time, and it steps down five times between September and November. Read on each site's own Hellenic Heritage page on 1 September 2026; last admission is twenty minutes before closing throughout.

Read the first two rows together: the Ancient Agora shuts half an hour before the Acropolis all summer and steps down earlier all autumn, so the classic "Acropolis then Agora" afternoon does not work after about four o'clock in September. And read the last row: Kerameikos prints "the site is temporarily closed" under its summer hours on the official page, while still publishing winter hours.
The two big museums keep their own weeks
Neither of these follows the site timetable above. The National Archaeological Museum is state-run but has a per-weekday calendar; the Acropolis Museum is a separate organisation entirely. Read on hh.gr and theacropolismuseum.gr on 1 September 2026.

Two things to take from this grid. The National Archaeological Museum's Tuesday 13:00 opening runs all year and is the single most commonly wasted morning in Athens — plan the Acropolis or an Agora into it. And the Acropolis Museum's Friday to 22:00 holds in both seasons, with the galleries cleared fifteen minutes before closing and the second-floor restaurant serving until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Closed days, and the ones that move
Six fixed dates, one that moves every year, and a national holiday that splits the two calendars.
The state sites and museums
Closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday, 25 December and 26 December. That list is identical on every Hellenic Heritage destination page, from the Acropolis to Sounion.
The Acropolis Museum
Closed on 1 January, Orthodox Easter Sunday, 1 May, 25 and 26 December — five dates, not six, because it opens on 25 March and gives free entry that day. It also runs short hours on 24 and 31 December, 09:00 to 15:00, and over Orthodox Easter: 12:00 to 18:00 on Good Friday and 09:00 to 15:00 on Holy Saturday.
Orthodox Easter moves, and it is usually not the Western date
The Greek Orthodox calendar puts Easter on a different Sunday from the Western one in most years, sometimes by weeks. A trip planned around a Western Easter break can land squarely on the Greek one, when the state sites are shut on the Sunday and much of the city closes around it. Check the date for your year before you fix flights.
Strikes are the unscheduled closure
State sites are staffed by ministry employees, so a public-sector strike can close the Acropolis at a few days' notice — and Hellenic Heritage tickets are non-refundable by their own terms. How Athens strikes are announced explains where they are published and what the two-hour change rule is for.
How to build a day around these timetables
Three rules that come straight out of the tables above.
Winter: one big site, then a museum
From November to March, everything except the Acropolis and the two museums is shut by 15:00. So the winter shape of an Athens day is a site in the morning and a museum in the afternoon, not two sites. The Acropolis until 17:00 and the Acropolis Museum until 20:00 — or 22:00 on a Friday — is the pairing the timetable actually allows.
Summer: the ends of the day, not the middle
From April to August the sites run to 20:00 and the useful hours are 08:00 to about 10:30 and after 17:30. The middle of the day belongs to the museums, which are air-conditioned, and to lunch. The season chart has the temperatures behind that.
Never plan a Tuesday morning around the National Archaeological Museum
It opens at 13:00 that day, all year. Put the Ancient Agora, Kerameikos or the Acropolis in that morning and take the museum in the afternoon — it is open until 20:00 on a summer Tuesday, which is the longest evening any state museum gives you.

What time does everything open in Athens?
The state archaeological sites all open at 08:00, every day they are open, all year. The National Archaeological Museum opens at 08:00 or 08:30 depending on the season and at 13:00 on Tuesdays; the Acropolis Museum opens at 09:00 every day. The tables have every band.
How early can you enter the Acropolis?
08:00, and in summer that is the hour worth having — the rock is unshaded and the marble is uncomfortable by late morning. Entry is by declared hour, so the early slots go first; how the ticket works explains the system.
Is 18:00 a good time to visit the Acropolis?
In April, May, September and October, yes — closing is between 18:00 and 20:00 in those months, the coaches have gone and the light is low. In winter, no: closing is 17:00 and last admission 16:40, so 18:00 is a locked gate.
Are things closed in Athens on Sunday?
The sites and museums are open; shops largely are not, and the central market on Athinas closes. In winter the first and third Sunday of the month are free at the state sites, which is a separate calendar worth reading.
When is the last admission?
Twenty minutes before closing at every state archaeological site, and thirty minutes before closing at the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum. The Acropolis Museum also clears its galleries fifteen minutes before it shuts.
Which sites close earliest in winter?
The Olympieion, the Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library, Kerameikos and Aristotle's Lyceum all close at 15:00 from 1 November to 31 March. The Ancient Agora and the Acropolis run to 17:00. The state table shows the whole step-down.
